He thinks it's about something more serious than Duchess's escape from Salina. So, Billy decided to sneak into Emmetts car as he was talking to Sally, which is how he ended up at the Wolcott house. It would have made more sense if when leaving, he threw an oar in the boat or had a . However, hed found a stream to clean himself off and eventually made his way to some empty boxcars. Sally angrily drives home, only to see the sheriff sitting on their porch at home. Duchess asks him where his father is, but Fitzy claims he doesnt know. Meanwhile, Woolly visits his sister Sarah who says that she has talked to Warden Williams, who is offering Woolly minimal consequences if he returns to juvie immediately. Up until about the last 60 pages or so, the story is fairly straightforward coming-of-age tale with vivid imagery of the time period and lots of pondering about the past and whats next.
